Comicon ’09 Costumes: the good, the bad & the fugly

Posted in Uncategorized on July 29, 2009 by law7355

Some of the cosplay outfits on display at this year’s Comicon: There are some downright unintentionally hilarious ones, some hotties, some notties and the usual fat trekkies. Oh, and one frikkin’ ugly Wookie that looks like its heads turning inside out…

Apollo 11 Moon Landing Pictures (from

Another round of awesome pictures over at all about the Apollo 11 Moon landing, and all in time for it’s 40th anniversary.
Below are my favourites in some form of chronological order, but for further details on the individual pictures, I’d encourage you to head over to for their explanations.
Also worth checking out is, which has lots of photos, video (which they streamed “live” 40 years to the minute after the original event!) and other info.
It’s a shame we don’t have anything (that I can think of anyway) that is so unifying an experience as that appeared to have been. nowadays we feel we’ve “experienced something unique” if we were there for the Vodacom Trafalgar Square karaoke or some flashmob or something else equally manufactured and cynically manipulated; driven by financial concerns rather than the desire to achieve and explore. With the internet and it’s Facebooks, Twitters, Diggs and suchlike, or “togetherness” is more clicky than ever before…
Those are my feelings anyway.

SA’s ATM’s get weaponised

Posted in Uncategorized on July 19, 2009 by law7355

From Gizmodo:

In South Africa, ATMs have been weaponized with pepper spray to ward off thieves. What could possibly go wrong??

Oh, this is what could go wrong:

The technology uses cameras to detect people tampering with the card slots. Another machine then ejects pepper spray to stun the culprit while police response teams race to the scene.

But the mechanism backfired in one incident last week when pepper spray was inadvertently inhaled by three technicians who required treatment from paramedics.

Patrick Wadula, spokesman for the Absa bank, which is piloting the scheme, told the Mail & Guardian Online: “During a routine maintenance check at an Absa ATM in Fish Hoek, the pepper spray device was accidentally activated.

“At the time there were no customers using the ATM. However, the spray spread into the shopping centre where the ATMs are situated.”

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t want to risk getting a blast of pepper spray in the face if I put my PIN in wrong.

Matchbox “War” Campaign

Posted in Uncategorized on July 12, 2009 by law7355

Found this over at CR Blog ( These are the new ads for Matchbox, and while I get the concept and certainly “played war” as a li’l one (sometimes with “Tom Thumbs” and army men in the flower beds of my mum’s garden), I find them massively disturbing.

I agree with the writer on that site that the unease comes partly from the tired, harrowed & expressionless face of the boy (real war doesn’t look like much fun) and from the fact that now isn’t the time to feature these images, where there are very real wars going on and (specifically here) newspapers are featuring stories of the young men killed in war and the pleas from their parents. Adults will relate to these images in almost the exact opposite way the art director probably imagined. On the whole, these do a disservice to Matchbox…
